Congratulations Alaska!

Ted Stevens (R-AK), the venally corrupt senator from the Great North, has been found guilty on all charges. He faces a maximum possible sentence of 35 years in prison and deserves each and every millisecond. Stevens has been in office for 40 years and has been an unscrupulous crook every moment.

While I am not disappointed that Stevens was convicted (I really want Begich to win), I am surprised it was on all counts.

As far as him being a venal, bad guy, like most things, the whole picture is not as simple.

Stevens has been s strong advocate for and defender of Public Broadcasting. If not for him, we would have much less than we do now, given the assaults of other conservatives.

Don't ask me for what else he has done that I agree with, right now. I'd have to do some thinking. Actually, from an Alaskan POV, Ted had been great, bringing in a lot of Federal dollars. But, not all of that money is money we should have spent.

How this will be greeted in Alaska will very with the politics of the communities. In Juneau AK, the people who have commented to me have been quite happy; but, they know my politics. In the more conservative city of Anchorage (and Wasilla), I suspect sympathies will lie with Uncle Ted.

Now if we can just get rid of Don Young, too.

Both these races have been tightening in recent days.

It sure seems like all the "big name" republicans are throwing Stevens under the bus.
