Sorry For All the Gory Deaths

It happens every couple of weeks or so. NATO troops kill innocent Afghans. After a several days "investigating the incident" (like we don't know where we are throwing our munitions) some officer issues a "heartfelt" (always they include that word), proforma apology.

Then the matter is handed over to the bookkeepers who issue the compensation.
~ $1,000 for a daughter
~ $5,000 for a mother
~ $8,000 maximum for a male relative
Usually there is some niggardly back and forth over exactly how many people were killed as the bookkeepers try to save a little money.

It's all very commercial and so very, very American.
