The question before the court is how will he do in the general election?
So far, Mitt's attempts at sincerity have been noticeably plastic. He has even failed at faking fake sincerity. His robotic recitation of America the Beautiful blanches all the humanity out of it and is less inspiring than a hangnail.
I doubt Romney will ever succeed at convincing people he means what he says or that he means much of anything. Baring a double dip depression I doubt he has much of a chance running against a feeling human being.

The reason even Republicans can't like the guy is that (1) he only knows what he stands for after someone tells him, and (2) he is really a very unlikeable person who does not seem to care about much at all except himself. Even Republicans do not like those qualities. That he seems to brag about the second and dissemble about the first only compounds things.
For better and worse, successful Presidential candidates in recent elections have been compelling though divisive figures.
When Clinton or Bush or Obama is in a room, it's all about Clinton or Bush or Obama.
The Dems tried a generic anti-Bush in 2004 and it didn't work.
Romney seems like a generic anti-Obama.
It's tough to love or hate him.
You are right (except I think it is easy to dislike Romney). I knew someone who met Bill Clinton and remarked at how astonishing it was how he could just capture people in a room, especially one on one.
